Rodrigo Franzao made this artwork called Abstract Proportion, and it feels like a puzzle I want to take apart and put back together. The forms are so clear, yet the overall structure is elusive. I imagine Franzao juggling the elements: a red dot like a misplaced decimal point, a big milky circle surrounded by a dark ring, and a blue disc cut off center by a smaller hole. It reminds me of the paintings of Elizabeth Murray, with their fractured geometries and playful color combinations. The brown grid enveloping everything flattens the space and ties everything together, holding it all in place. There's an exciting tension between the flatness of the grid and the depth suggested by the overlapping shapes. It's not just a painting; it's an object, a construction, a thing. Abstract Proportion feels like a proposal for a new way of seeing, one that values ambiguity and invites multiple interpretations.
