George Joji Miyasaki made ‘Summer Field’ using a printmaking process. Miyasaki was celebrated for his abstract expressionist prints, and the texture of this work comes from that tradition. You can see that the paper wasn't just a passive surface, but an active participant in the printmaking. It has soaked up the ink, creating those soft colors, and the pressure of the printing press has given it a subtle, almost fabric-like quality. The layering of colors gives the print depth, while the rough edges and visible marks of the artist's hand remind us of the labor involved in its making. By engaging with this medium, Miyasaki blurred the lines between high art and craft, showing how the thoughtful use of materials and processes can bring profound meaning to a work of art.
