Le canard 

Félix Ziem created this oil painting, titled "Le canard", depicting a lifeless duck against a somber background. The duck, a symbol often associated with abundance and provision, lies here drained of vitality, hung upside down as if awaiting preparation. Consider the "vanitas" paintings of the Dutch Golden Age, where fowl, among other symbols of transience, warned against earthly pleasures, reminding viewers of mortality.
