Hendrik Krock, a Danish painter, created this rendition of ‘The Last Supper’, titled ‘Nadveren’, sometime between the late 17th and early 18th centuries. Paintings depicting biblical scenes were often commissioned by the church or wealthy patrons, and were not only devotional but served to reinforce social hierarchies. Krock’s painting reflects the cultural norms of his time. Note the figures around the table – all men, save a woman standing behind Jesus. The male disciples dominate the scene while the woman remains in the background, an anonymous server. In a time when women's roles were largely confined to domestic spaces, this composition subtly reinforces gender roles. The hierarchical composition reflects the artist’s cultural context, yet it remains a powerful meditation on faith, sacrifice, and human relationships. As you reflect on this painting, consider the untold stories of those not centered in the frame, and how their presence, or lack thereof, speaks volumes.
