This print, "Daar kinderen hebt ge een print, / Waar ge uw vermaak in vindt," was made by Glenisson & Zonen, and shows scenes of children's games. The print gives us a fascinating glimpse into the social and cultural world of childhood in, most likely, 19th century Netherlands or Belgium, where the firm was active. The scenes depict familiar pastimes. We see children playing on a seesaw, flying a kite, and even what appears to be a game of tag. The clothing and setting suggest a middle-class environment, perhaps reflecting the aspirations and values of the families who would have purchased such prints for their children. Prints like these provide valuable evidence for social historians. By studying them, along with other sources such as children's books, educational manuals, and family letters, we can gain a deeper understanding of childhood, education, and social life. The social and institutional context is critical to our understanding of these playful scenes.
