Curatorial notes

Maurice Denis made this painting, Visitation dans l’escalier de ‘Silencio’, sometime in his career using paint on canvas. Denis is interested in how to depict the spiritual world in material form. The colours are muted, like faded frescoes, adding to this feeling of the past. If you look closely at the figure ascending the stairs, you can see how the paint is applied in thin, translucent layers, almost like watercolor washes. The brushstrokes are soft and blended, giving the figure a dreamy, ethereal quality. It’s like Denis is trying to capture not just a physical presence, but a sense of inner light or spiritual energy. Denis's work reminds me of Fra Angelico, who also used gentle colours to create heavenly realms, except rather than gold leaf and perfect symmetry, Denis is more interested in the impression of a holy moment. There is a lot of ambiguity in this piece, which only adds to its magic.
