This is August Macke’s 'Sunny Way,' it's an oil on canvas, and gosh, what a colorist he was! I see a mix of bright reds, greens, and blues, all buzzing and vibrating against each other. Imagine Macke, maybe outside, or remembering being outside, quickly laying down these strokes, trying to catch a feeling. I mean, look at how the tree trunks become these pulsating columns of red-orange—not exactly naturalistic, but so full of life. And the way he dabs the yellow highlights in the foliage, it feels like the sun is really flickering through the leaves. There’s a real sense of immediacy here, like he’s trying to capture a fleeting moment. I love how Macke was part of this whole movement of artists who were looking at the world in new ways. I think that he was in conversation with folks like Matisse and the other Fauves who were pushing color to its limits. It’s this whole ongoing exchange of ideas that keeps art alive. So juicy! It reminds me to get back in the studio and push myself.
