Deiryu made this painting of Bamboo with ink, but when I look at it, I'm mostly thinking about the pressure of the brush on the paper. You know, the artist must have loaded up the brush with ink, then just swooped down, making these quick, dark marks for the leaves. Look at the bamboo stalk, it's less about describing it realistically and more about capturing its essence. I can almost feel Deiryu's hand moving, the energy and the rhythm of their body as they painted. The surface feels absorbent, like the ink bled a little, which is nice. It’s not trying to be slick or perfect. You know, every artist is in conversation with those who came before. Deiryu was part of that long, beautiful tradition of ink painting, but doing it his own way. For me, it's a reminder that painting isn't just about what you see, but how you feel and how you move.
