Stefano della Bella created this print, "Jupiter and Semele," as part of his 'Game of Mythology' series in the 17th century. During the 1600s, European art was often a stage for the dramas of mythology, used to convey power and moral lessons. In this scene, we witness a pivotal, and fatal, moment: Semele, a mortal woman, demands to see Jupiter, the king of the gods, in his full glory. Bound by a promise, Jupiter complies, knowing it will destroy her. The print captures Semele amidst swirling drapery, a mix of fear and desperate desire, while Jupiter appears as a storm cloud, his divine form radiating lethal power. Semele’s story has always struck me as a potent exploration of longing and the danger of hubris, but also reflects the limited agency afforded to women. It's a reminder of how classical myths continue to inform our understanding of identity, power, and the human condition.
