Curatorial notes

Theo Nieuwenhuis created Tak met bloesem, or Branch with Blossom, using brush and ink. Look at the way the ink bleeds slightly into the paper. You can almost feel the artist watching the ink spread, embracing its unpredictable nature as part of the process. The paper isn't pristine either; it has a handmade quality. The entire composition is rendered in muted tones, the stark contrast between the paper and the dark ink creates a striking silhouette. Close to the center you’ll see the base of the branches, thick and strong, supporting the delicate network of twigs and leaves. Notice how they reach outwards, creating a sense of expansion and growth. This piece reminds me of the work of Georgia O'Keeffe, who also found inspiration in the natural world, magnifying details to reveal hidden beauty and subtle abstraction. Like O’Keeffe, Nieuwenhuis invites us to see the world anew, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the beauty found in the everyday.
