Curatorial notes
James Malton created this aquatint of the Royal Hospital Kilmainham in Dublin around the turn of the 19th century. Malton’s work provides a window into the architecture and social life of Dublin during a period of significant political and social upheaval. The hospital, originally established to house retired soldiers, reflects the complex relationship between the British military presence and Irish society. Malton's choice to depict this institution invites us to consider the human cost of colonialism and the ways in which military structures shaped the urban landscape. Note the figures populating the scene, they offer glimpses into the class distinctions of the time. The inclusion of a horse-drawn carriage and well-dressed individuals hints at the presence of the elite, while the hospital itself speaks to the experiences of ordinary soldiers. It’s as if Malton asks us to reflect on the varied experiences of people living in Dublin.
