This page from a 1924 edition of *Art - Goût - Beauté* magazine is a fashion plate, so it’s made using printing techniques. I think of it as a kind of social snapshot. The anonymous artist had a job to do, to communicate the elegance of Jeanne Lanvin’s dress designs. Look at the figures: They are gathered for dinner at the Ritz! The artist uses thin lines and washes of color to define the forms. Notice how flat it is, like a stage set. This has a relationship to painting, as it's all about design and composition. The figures are arranged like characters in a play, each with their distinct pose and costume. What were they thinking, what were their lives like? Consider this a kind of conversation between fashion, illustration, and painting, all feeding into and inspiring each other. It reminds me of a passage in Proust. Fashion and painting are both embodied forms of expression, each with unique histories and conventions.
