Willem de Zwart made this etching, "Kar met paard op een pad langs de bosrand," with metal plates and etching tools. The image is all about line: consider the physical labor of drawing, cutting, and biting these lines into a metal plate. De Zwart was a member of the Hague School, and his art was rooted in everyday Dutch life. By using a printing process to create his composition, he was able to repeat and share his observations far and wide, something unique to the age of industrial production. The dark values were created by the density of lines, while areas with fewer lines appear lighter. This print is a reminder that making is not just about individual expression but also about labor, industry, and community.
