Arthur G. Merkley made this red and white napkin, with its striking deer design, sometime during his lifetime. The process is really apparent: how the pattern emerges line by line, repeating in these geometric bands. It’s all about the methodical buildup, a real labor of love. I find myself drawn to the central image of the deer. It’s rendered in such a simple, almost naive way, yet it captures the essence of the animal's grace. The texture of the fabric adds another layer; you can almost feel the weave, the slight imperfections that give it character. The red and white contrast is so vibrant and bold, giving the whole piece an arresting presence. Thinking about this piece, I’m reminded of the work of textile artist Anni Albers, who also explored the intersection of craft, design, and fine art. Like Albers, Merkley elevates a functional object to something of beauty and contemplation.
