Curatorial notes

Anton Mauve rendered this sketch of a cow from behind with black chalk on paper. The overall composition is simple; the cow dominates the small format, its weighty presence filling the frame from top to bottom. The artist's marks work together to create a sense of mass and form. Notice the economy of line. Mauve uses quick, decisive strokes to define the animal's contours, capturing the play of light and shadow across its muscular frame. The texture of the chalk adds depth, suggesting the rough hide and solid build of the cow. The cow’s rear view is quite unusual, even humorous. One wonders if this was a conscious act to destabilize traditional pastoral scenes or a playful exercise in form and perspective. This simple sketch invites us to reconsider our relationship with the natural world. It challenges us to find beauty and interest in unexpected perspectives.
