Curatorial notes
Philippus Velijn made this print called "Couple in a Landscape with Lightning" using etching techniques, giving us this highly detailed monochromatic image. Made in the Netherlands, likely in the early 19th century, it's interesting to think about this work in the context of the Dutch landscape tradition, which often featured serene scenes. Velijn presents us with nature's sublime power instead. The couple seems terrified of the lightning, perhaps speaking to changing attitudes towards nature brought about by the Enlightenment and the rise of scientific inquiry. As an art historian, I always want to know more about how these images circulated. Was this meant for a book? Was it sold as a single print? Investigating the printmaking industry and the art market of the time can give us a fuller picture of the work's social life and meaning.
