Johann David Passavant made this hand drawing titled, “Christus reinigt den TempelHandzeichnung, bei Lawrence, jetzt bei Woodburn”, likely in the early 19th century. As a 19th-century German artist, Passavant navigated a world shaped by religious norms, and this work offers a glimpse into the artist’s religious and cultural environment. The scene depicts Jesus expelling the merchants and money changers from the Temple in Jerusalem. The artist seems to reflect traditional representations of religious events, as it brings to life a dramatic scene of justice and divine authority. What I find so compelling about this piece is how Passavant captures the emotional intensity of the moment. There is an atmosphere of both chaos and moral outrage. It makes you consider the artist's perspective on power, religion, and the role of moral authority in society. The drawing invites us to reflect on the timeless themes of faith, justice, and the clash between spiritual values and material interests.
