This is Hubert Quellinus' rendering of 'Sculptuur van Amor', an engraving which can be found at the Rijksmuseum. At first glance, the interplay of shadow and light suggests a three-dimensional form. Notice how the figure's smooth skin is contrasted with the rough texture of the tree trunk. Quellinus uses a sophisticated system of signs to represent the allegorical figure of Amor, or Cupid. The absence of wings or a bow and arrow destabilizes our expectations of this symbol of love. Instead, Amor is shown in a contemplative pose that invites us to question the nature of desire. The subtle gradations of tone, achieved through fine lines, create a delicate balance. This emphasis on form and composition over traditional symbolism encourages an ongoing interpretation of the artwork.
