Asger Jorn made this painting, "Une mime de rien (ou presque)" with oil on canvas. The painting has many ideas and concepts that connect to the social and cultural context of the time it was made. Looking at the image, we can see how the visual codes, cultural references, and historical associations create meaning. It was made during the middle of the twentieth century, and Jorn's work was deeply affected by the Second World War. Jorn was from Denmark, but he lived in France for many years, working in Paris after the end of the war. Jorn was interested in the Situationist International movement, which was critical of the institutions of art and society at the time. As an art historian, I use research resources to understand more. Reflecting on the meaning of art as something that is contingent on social and institutional context helps us understand it better.
