This photograph of Wilhelmina, Hendrik, and Juliana was made by Guy de Coral & Co. sometime in the early 20th Century. It's a carefully staged shot, a formal portrait designed to convey an image of royal dignity and family unity. Look closely at the way the light falls across their faces, and the subtle gradations of tone in their clothing. It’s amazing how much detail and texture the photographer managed to capture in monochrome! The subtle sheen on Hendrik's coat, the delicate lace detailing on Wilhelmina's dress, and the soft folds of Juliana's baby gown. There is a whole world of greys, creams, and blacks. The composition, with its central arrangement of figures and formal poses, reminds me of old master paintings like those of Manet or Whistler, which also use the medium of portraiture to explore ideas about society and identity. And just like those paintings, this photograph leaves so much open to interpretation. What were they really like, this family? What was the nature of their relationships? Art is never about fixed answers, but about raising questions, and opening up spaces for imagination.
