Raffaello Schiaminossi created this print of Profeet Micha sometime between 1587 and 1622 using etching. Schiaminossi was part of a generation of Northern Mannerist artists whose works were shaped by the religious and political upheaval of the late 16th century. The image of Profeet Micha presents a figure draped in voluminous robes, holding a scroll, his expression a mix of solemnity and foreboding. He seems to be caught between worlds. During the late Renaissance, the role of prophets was often re-evaluated. Some were seen as voices of dissent against established power. Others were representatives of spiritual and moral authority during crisis. Schiaminossi’s print invites us to reflect on the power of individuals who dare to speak truth to power, even when it’s unpopular. The print captures a moment of introspection, emphasizing the personal burden of conveying divine messages during uncertain times.
