Gerrit Willem Dijsselhof drafted this pen drawing for a stained glass window, its date remains unknown. Dijsselhof situated himself in the Dutch Art Nouveau movement and, in his varied artistic practice, drew inspiration from both Western and Eastern aesthetics. Consider the cultural moment in which Dijsselhof found himself: a time of increasing industrialization, but also one in which artists sought to return to craft and nature. This tension is palpable in his drawing. The rigidity of the grid contrasts with the organic forms of the medallion, a stylistic choice through which the artwork explores themes of harmony and balance. The drawing invites us to consider how beauty can emerge from structure. How does this drawing reflect our own desires to find beauty in simplicity, to connect with nature, and to seek harmony in a world that often feels chaotic?
