This Untitled piece, by Wade Guyton, takes a simple form and makes it sing with the possibilities of process. The black ink against the white feels stark, almost like a print, but it's the way the ink sits on the surface that gets me thinking about what it means to make a mark. The texture in those solid black lines tells a story – it’s not just a flat expanse, but a record of movement, of the printer head stuttering across the canvas. I see little imperfections, those glitches, as part of the language of the piece. They remind me that art isn't about perfection but about embracing the unexpected. That slight misalignment where the lines meet in the centre of the ‘X’ is like a tiny rebellion against the idea of flawless reproduction. It’s interesting to think about how Guyton is in conversation with other artists interested in reproduction like Warhol, but he's also doing something totally different. He's showing us that even in repetition, there's always room for surprise.
