This "Untitled" piece was made by Max Bill, though I don't know when or with what. But what gets me about Bill's works is how he juggles clarity and playfulness. You see, these aren't just rigid geometric forms, they’re like dancing squares of colour. The surface has this kind of smooth, almost industrial feel, with these flat planes of colour sitting perfectly next to each other. And that palette! Those pinks, greens, blues and oranges, they shouldn't work together, but they do, creating a visual buzz that is both soothing and stimulating. Look at how the green squares seems to push forward while the blues recede, playing with your sense of depth. Bill reminds me a little of Josef Albers, in the way he explores colour relationships, but with a Swiss twist. It’s as if he is saying, "Let’s build a world of pure form, but let’s not forget to have some fun while we’re at it".
