This ornamental design, "Fries met pijlenkoker," was created by Sébastien Leclerc I using etching techniques. The print reveals the artist's skillful manipulation of the etching process, where lines are incised into a metal plate and then printed. The varying line weights and densities create depth and texture, characteristic of this medium. This was an intaglio process that was used commercially for reproducing imagery and ornament. Leclerc and others provided designs that were used for the decoration of architecture and furniture, enabling a wider distribution of decorative styles. In essence, Leclerc's print exemplifies the intersection of artistic skill, technical process, and commercial production. The print’s ornamental design reflects a culture of mass production, where aesthetics were disseminated widely. The work invites us to consider how techniques like etching democratized design, making it accessible beyond elite circles, and blurring the boundaries between art and craft.
