Carel Adolph Lion Cachet created this poster design for the Christian Association of Young Men Excelsior. Although undated, it reflects the cultural milieu of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Cachet, born in the Netherlands, lived during a time of increasing globalization and cultural exchange. The design includes inscriptions in Dutch and Hebrew, reflecting the intersection of Christian theology with other cultural and religious traditions. The use of Hebrew, in particular, invites us to consider the relationship between Christian identity and its Jewish roots. The poster invokes the language of faith, peace, and salvation. Yet, it also asks us to consider how these concepts intersect with notions of masculinity and social identity, given its commission by the Young Men's Association. Cachet’s design suggests a call to faith that is both deeply personal and embedded in a specific cultural context.
