This is a foot study made with pencil on paper by Alfred Freddy Krupa on November 30, 1991. What hits me first is how the hatching follows the form. The artist is really thinking about how a foot is built. It's interesting to me how Krupa builds the foot out of these tiny, vibrating marks. It feels like he's not just drawing what he sees, but trying to understand it from the inside out. You can see the texture of the paper coming through, which gives it this raw, immediate feel. Look at the heel, how he uses these short, dark strokes to suggest the weight and the curve of the bone. There's a real sensitivity to the human form, even in this small study. There's something about this piece that reminds me of Egon Schiele's drawings, that same kind of nervous energy and intensity. Both artists are looking for something beyond just surface appearances. They're digging into the psychological and emotional core of their subjects.
