Editor: This is "De naakten kleden" – "Dressing the Nude" – an 18th-century watercolor and print drawing by Giovanni Volpato, here at the Rijksmuseum. The figures seem classical, yet the ornate floral border gives it a playful character. How do you read its composition? Curator: Immediately, the framing device asserts itself. Consider how the eye moves: from the curvilinear flourishes of the floral border to the central scene, contained yet contrasting with the wilder nature surrounding the figures. Do you observe a dialogue between restraint and release, order and disorder? Editor: Yes, I do. The figures are all contained by this frame but are then in this quite chaotic nature setting. Curator: Precisely. Now observe how the central figures, arranged almost in a pyramidal structure, anchor the visual narrative. The verticality of the standing woman is offset by the slumped pose of the seated figures, creating dynamic tension. What compositional choices contribute to your reading? Editor: That makes sense. Perhaps the colours? The deep reds of the woman's dress really pops, compared to the nude figures. Also, the bright border with a mix of colours gives the eyes so many elements to consider. Curator: Color serves as a key signifier, doesn't it? But the use of watercolor, so delicate, alongside the etched lines of the print...it points to a complex understanding of artistic techniques that further enriches our reading of contrasts within this singular piece. Considering line, texture, form and colour, what sense can we make of Volpato’s intention? Editor: So, by isolating the artistic decisions Volpato made, we can appreciate the depth of a seemingly simple composition! I guess this gives new eyes to viewing and understanding art! Curator: Indeed. Paying attention to those compositional aspects makes this so rich and meaningful. It goes beyond just dressing the nude, we are seeing new creative styles emerge.
