Ralston Crawford made these Seven Composition Studies with ink on paper. What strikes me is the way the lines feel both tentative and sure, as if he’s thinking through form in real-time, right there on the page. The marks are spare but each study is a world unto itself. I keep coming back to the little square in the top right; how the hatched lines create a density, a kind of visual weight, that's balanced by the openness of the other forms. There’s a push and pull between clarity and obfuscation. Look at the three circles hovering nearby – they seem to comment on the geometry like a little chorus. Crawford’s interest in industrial landscapes echoes that of Charles Sheeler, but there's also a playfulness here, a willingness to let the composition breathe and remain unresolved. For me, it’s a reminder that art is as much about the questions you ask as the answers you find.
