John Robert Cozens created this watercolor and graphite landscape drawing during a time when the Picturesque movement was in full swing. Cozens’s travels throughout Europe informed his rendering of natural settings. We get a glimpse of the late 18th century fascination with both untamed wilderness and idealized pastoral scenes. The subtle monochromatic palette softly evokes a sense of longing. Are we looking at a real place, or a remembered one? Consider the composition, how the layering of land, water, and sky invites you to contemplate nature. Cozens creates a world that feels timeless, yet also deeply personal. The sublime quality of nature is tempered with a gentle, reflective mood.
