Curatorial notes
Jan Both made this landscape drawing with pen and brown ink, brush, and gray wash. The apparent ease of this seemingly simple drawing belies the skill required to produce it. Using the pen and brush to create different tones through hatching, and the layering of light and dark wash, the artist expertly recreates the effects of natural light on the depicted Italian landscape. The figures on the road, with their pack animals, suggest a common scene of working life. Both elevates the depiction of labor to a higher art, making it the central point of the composition. Both’s mastery of the drawn and washed medium reminds us to challenge the hierarchy of techniques, understanding that artistic brilliance resides not only in the grand gesture of painting but also in the delicate handwork seen in this unassuming drawing.
