This is a photograph of an antique stele, showing a woman, made by the firm Anderson. The monochromatic tones and the way the light catches the stone really emphasizes the textures, doesn't it? Look at the drapery around her – see how it clings and folds. The artist really understood how fabric falls, how it reveals and conceals. It reminds me of my own process, layering paint, then scraping it back to reveal what's underneath. I love how a single mark can hint at an entire process, all the decisions that led to this one moment. And that profile! The serene expression as she holds what looks like an offering. It makes you wonder about the stories behind these ancient objects and the rituals of daily life. I’m reminded of Brancusi, whose simple, elegant sculptures share a similar timeless quality. Each work is like a fragment of a larger, ongoing conversation, a quest to capture something essential about the human condition.
