Albert Levone painted this lamp, probably in watercolour, at an unknown date. I’m really drawn to the way the colour shifts and emerges, through intuitive moves, trial and error. You can almost feel Levone’s process as he negotiates the object. Look at how the light falls, the tonal variations, and how he captures this so subtly. I can imagine him thinking and rethinking his process. What’s so interesting is the way the surface seems to absorb and reflect light. It’s as though the object itself is a source of light and heat. It’s heavy, grounded, and very present. The handle is like a graphic sign, or a playful flourish! Painting is like a conversation, an exchange of ideas across time. Artists are constantly inspiring one another’s creativity. Painting is an ongoing process of exploration, embracing ambiguity, and allowing for multiple interpretations. There’s no fixed or definitive reading.
