Friedrich Wilhelm Hirt rendered this landscape with pen and brown ink, creating ‘Gehöft an einem Fluß, im Vordergrund eine Viehherde,’ or ‘Farmstead on a River, with a Herd of Cattle in the Foreground’. Hirt's bucolic scene is a microcosm of early 19th-century German life, steeped in Romanticism's reverence for nature. Yet, it also speaks to the socio-economic structures of the time. The presence of livestock suggests an agrarian economy, while the distant town hints at the beginnings of urbanization. The shepherd seated off to the side represents a class structure bound to the land, their lives dictated by the rhythms of nature and agricultural labor.
