Frans Wouters created this landscape with a farmer's cart drawing sometime in the 17th century. The etchings depict a pastoral scene with a cart pulled by a horse or donkey with two figures in the foreground and a farm house in the mid-ground. During this period the Dutch Republic was experiencing a Golden Age of prosperity and cultural flourishing. Landscapes like this were popular among the rising middle class, who often bought art to decorate their homes and demonstrate their social status. But within this prosperity existed a very rigid class system. The figures are small and somewhat anonymous which mirrors the economic status of the rural working class in the Netherlands at this time. Wouters's landscape invites us to reflect on the relationship between idealized visions of nature and the realities of labor and social class. The idyllic scene obscures the harsh realities of rural life for many during this era. The artwork offers a glimpse into a world where human presence is intertwined with the rhythms of nature.
