Max Beckmann created this untitled graphite drawing of two figures on paper. At first glance, the sketch appears raw with its restless lines and unfinished quality. Beckmann’s structural approach focuses on the geometric simplification of form. Notice how the composition places one figure partially behind the other, yet both command equal attention. The figure in profile has a strong nose and receding forehead while the other stares straight ahead. The figures are connected by a few lines indicating the shoulders and a suggestion of a bow tie. What meaning might we find in their proximity, and their relationship? The loose drawing style gives the image an immediate, almost primal energy, typical of Beckmann’s exploration of human existence and psychological insight. We are left to ponder the interplay between the figures and how they reflect the artist's vision.
