About this artwork

This 'Hartsvanger', or 'heart catcher', is a hunting sword made by Juriaan Chorus in the 18th century. The sword is a study in contrasts. The handle is ornate, a symphony of shimmering silvers and golds, with an almost organic texture. Yet, this opulence sharply contrasts with the blade. A long, lean expanse of weathered steel, it speaks of function over form, of stark purpose. The curve of the blade introduces an element of dynamism. It isn't a straight, unyielding line but one with subtle tension, hinting at potential energy, as the blade seems to yearn for release. This tension encapsulates the hunt, the anticipation and the impending moment of action. Consider how Chorus destabilizes conventional aesthetics by juxtaposing beauty and brutality. This sword isn't merely a weapon; it's a statement on the intersection of life and death, luxury and necessity, and the strange dance between them.
