This is a gala dress sword with sheath used during Queen Juliana's inauguration, crafted by an anonymous maker. The sword is more than a mere ceremonial object; it embodies concepts of power, duty, and national identity. Its presence at the coronation hints at the historical weight of the monarchy and the performance of sovereignty. While it presents a traditionally masculine image, the sword was present at the coronation of a queen, therefore adding another layer to its meaning. The gala sword challenges us to consider who wields power, and in what contexts. Swords are heavy and the history of colonialism is even heavier. It speaks volumes, even in its silence. What emotions does the sight of this sword evoke in you?
