Curatorial notes

Lutkie & Cranenburg’s ‘Ambachten’—or ‘Crafts’—is a print depicting workers in the Netherlands. Each panel offers a snapshot of a different trade, from coopering to baking, providing a glimpse into the labor that sustained Dutch society. This artwork invites us to consider the historical and social contexts of labor. During the early modern period, the Netherlands experienced significant economic growth, with trade and craftsmanship playing vital roles in shaping its identity. This print serves as a testament to the value placed on skilled labor and the contributions of everyday workers to the nation's prosperity. However, it's essential to acknowledge the potential for idealization in such representations. While celebrating the dignity of labor, artworks like this might obscure the challenges and inequalities inherent in the economic system. Who is included, and who is left out of this vision of Dutch society? How do representations of labor intersect with issues of gender, race, and class, and how do they reflect or challenge the prevailing social hierarchies of the time?
