This series of photographs titled "Familie en vrienden", by P. Brandsma, presents a fragmented narrative through its composition and arrangement. Each photograph, with its distinct subject and setting, functions as a signifier within a larger semiotic structure. The placement of these images on the page, seemingly random, creates a visual language. It invites us to consider how meaning is constructed not only within each photograph but also through their juxtaposition. Consider the texture of the album page itself, its matte surface contrasting with the glossy prints. This tactile element underscores the personal, almost diaristic, nature of the work. The varying sizes and orientations of the photographs disrupt any sense of linear narrative, challenging our expectations of traditional storytelling. The structural arrangement here doesn't prescribe a fixed interpretation. Instead it encourages an open-ended engagement with memory, representation, and the very act of seeing.
