Simon Hantai made Peinture using oil paint, and what grabs me first is how the colours drip and meld, a real messy dance of creation. Up close, you see how the paint is both thick and thin, transparent in places, almost like watercolor, and then suddenly dense and opaque. Look at how the black paint cascades down, like tears or maybe spilled ink, each drop marking a moment, a decision. There's a real sense of layering here, of adding and subtracting, building up and breaking down. It reminds me of de Kooning, but maybe with a more somber mood? Ultimately, it's a reminder that art isn't about perfection, it's about the journey, the process, the beautiful mess we make along the way.
