This photograph of a building on Korenmarkt 61A in Doetinchem was made by an anonymous photographer working with Monumentenzorg. I’m wondering, looking at this sepia image, if the photographer saw the building as a portrait? They've carefully framed this building, making sure to capture the details of its facade. I can imagine the photographer positioning their camera, maybe in the very early morning, waiting for just the right light to bring out the texture of the building's surface. I'm struck by the way the light seems to soften the edges of the building, giving it a dreamy, almost ethereal quality. It reminds me of the work of Atget, another anonymous photographer, wandering the streets of Paris, documenting the city's architecture. It's like the photographer is in dialogue with these other artists across time, each of them finding new ways of seeing and representing the world around them. I wonder what that person was thinking and feeling as they were taking it.
