This untitled pastel drawing was made by George Bunker sometime in the mid to late 20th century. What interests me here is not the scene itself, which could be anywhere, but the role of the artist, Bunker, as an everyman. After serving in WWII, Bunker returned to the US, studied and then taught art for most of his adult life. What does it mean to make art accessible to all? Bunker's approach was rooted in the democratization of artistic expression, breaking down the barriers between artist and viewer. Bunker's artistic trajectory invites us to consider how art education, often seen as a privilege, can empower individuals from diverse backgrounds. What resources might you use to explore Bunker’s position and contribution to 20th century art? Perhaps an archive of student art from the various schools where he taught? What kind of social structures can art help to create?
