This untitled work by George Bunker is made with crayon on paper. You can see how the image emerges through layer upon layer of marks. Imagine Bunker’s process, his intuition guiding the movement of his hand, the pressure of the crayon against the page. There's this one bold stroke of lavender that cuts across the middle, almost like a bridge. It’s like Bunker is having a conversation with color, thinking through feeling. What was he thinking when he made it? Perhaps he wanted to capture an fleeting moment. The texture of the crayon creates a lovely rough surface, full of character and depth. It reminds me of Joan Mitchell. Artists are always building on each other's ideas, aren't they? Painting is this ongoing dialogue through marks and colors, embracing uncertainty and allowing for multiple readings.
