This sketch, "Reisverslag van eind september 1880," was created by Louis Apol in 1880 using graphite on paper. The diptych is divided by the book's gutter with text on the left and a sketch on the right. The left page contains tightly packed, linear script that hints at Apol's personal observations and reflections during a journey. On the right, a sketch shows Apol's interest in capturing the essence of his observations through simplified forms. Note the linear quality of the graphite work, as well as Apol's economy of line. The cross-hatching and unfinished quality of the sketch reveal a sense of immediacy and the spontaneous nature of the creative process. The gridded paper showing underneath, like the text, is not just a backing but an integrated part of the work. The lines operate almost like a structuralist grid that underpins the visible sketch. This interplay between writing and drawing, structure and observation invites us to consider how Apol synthesized his experiences.
