These block-like forms were made by Tiberiy Szilvashi with paint. The rough texture is not just from the paint itself, but also the gestures of the artist's hand, as he applied the material to the rectangular supports. Note how the colors seem almost arbitrarily applied, with no attention paid to the corners or edges of the form. Szilvashi's technique reflects a kind of impatience with the careful rules that usually govern painting, as well as a desire to push beyond the traditions of fine art. Instead, this work seems to be more about the raw experience of applying paint, almost as a form of labor. The crudeness of the forms is a key part of their effect. By emphasizing the physical act of making, Szilvashi prompts us to think about the relationship between creativity and work, challenging the usual distinctions between the two. The combination of colors makes the work seem very free, playful, while the overall process reveals a gritty and determined engagement with the materiality of paint itself.
