Curatorial notes

Utagawa Kunisada created this woodblock print triptych depicting "Hostile Waves Approaching the Modern Prince Genji" during the Edo period, a time of relative peace and flourishing arts in Japan. The print reflects the era's fascination with classical literature, particularly "The Tale of Genji," which Kunisada cleverly modernizes. We see a central male figure, possibly Genji, poised with a sword, flanked by two women in a boat, their elaborate kimonos speaking to the refined aesthetics of the time. This depiction of a modern Genji and his companions offers a commentary on the contemporary social dynamics of the time. Kunisada plays with themes of love, power, and social status, inviting us to consider the emotional landscape of his subjects. The subtle tension between the figures and the encroaching "hostile waves" might reflect personal anxieties or broader societal concerns of the time.
