Editor: So, this is Otto Freundlich's "Composition," made around 1930. It's an abstract piece using mixed media, quite geometric. I'm struck by the earthy yet artificial tones—it's a curious combination. What jumps out at you when you look at this work? Curator: I'm immediately drawn to the labor evident in its construction. Freundlich's engagement with materiality pushes us to consider not just the image, but also the conditions of its making. Look at the visible brushstrokes; these aren't effortless sweeps. Each carefully placed form involved decisions relating to color mixing, pigment quality and texture. Editor: That's interesting. I was focusing on the arrangement of the shapes, the color combinations... the aesthetic qualities. Curator: Precisely, the material handling, it isn't separated from those formal choices, it directly influences them. The "drawing" aspect – what materials did Freundlich have easy access to? What textures were considered high-value during this period? Consider how Freundlich's supplies and working conditions impacted not only the visual composition, but his mindset throughout the creative process. Does it challenge or reaffirm divisions between high art and what some consider "craft?" Editor: I see your point. By thinking about the physical making, it does start to reframe the idea of abstraction. It becomes less about pure form and more about...the reality of its creation. Curator: And consider the social context. The availability of these materials; what do they tell us about the cultural and industrial landscape Freundlich operated within? He isn't just painting an abstract shape; he's using colors, forms and materials rooted within a complex network of social meanings, modes of production and consumption. Editor: Thinking about the materials opens up this whole other dimension of understanding. I appreciate that a lot. Curator: Yes, and by considering these components, we might more fully see all that Otto Freundlich invites us to consider in his "Composition."

"The power of a colourful composition depends on each area of colour exercising the greatest possible degree of attraction and repulsion with regard to those surrounding it." In many of his pictures Otto Freundlich examined the rhythms which arise when different colours encounter and different masses. While the strong contrasts in this drawing come about through complementary relationships, there is also an encounter between closely related and carefully graduated shades of colour.
