Makinti Napanangka painted this piece, Kungka Kutjarra (Two Women), using acrylic on canvas. There's such a sense of movement and rhythm here, isn't there? Look at how she builds up the surface with these rhythmic lines, a testament to the hypnotic power of process. I find myself drawn to the textured surface, the way the paint sits so matter-of-factly on the canvas. The ochres and reds, punctuated with those surprising lilacs, give the whole thing a kind of earthy vibrancy. Notice that cluster of concentric circles down near the bottom edge – it's almost like a little world within a world, encapsulating the piece as a whole, a reminder of art's capacity to hold multiple meanings. This piece reminds me of Agnes Martin, in the use of iterative lines. But here, Napanangka’s mark-making feels rawer, more connected to the earth. It’s a conversation across cultures, across generations – art as an ongoing dialogue, open to endless interpretation.
