This is the back of a postcard, probably sent some time in the 1930s, by Richard Nicolaüs Roland Holst. You can see the two green postage stamps up at the top right, and the writing is this sort of elegant dark ink. It's so interesting looking at someone else’s handwriting, isn't it? It's like getting a glimpse into their mind, their process of thinking. Notice how the loops of the letters connect and flow, almost like a dance. Look at the capital letters - there’s a real flair there, a sense of someone enjoying the act of writing. It reminds me of how I approach painting, where each brushstroke is a response to the previous one, a conversation between the hand and the eye. I can really feel the energy and personality of Roland Holst in this simple everyday communication. Art is so often a private moment of connection. Do you think the recipient knew they were in conversation with an artist?
